William J. Richmond

ADAMS, N.Y.  —  William J. ‘Jerry’ Richmond, 78, of 59 E. Church Street, died Sunday morning at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown. 

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with Rev. N. Bud Masters, pastor of the Adams Village Baptist Church, officiating. The burial will be private in the Adams State Road Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. preceding the funeral. The American Legion and VFW will conduct a service at 2:45 p.m.

Born Oct. 12, 1930, in Rodman, son of Harold and Dorothy Mantle Richmond, he graduated from Adams Center High School and Canton ATC. In 1951 he enlisted in the US Army and served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. 

Following his discharge in 1953, he went to work as a computer technician for the IBM Corporation where he remained until his retirement.

He married Jane Staples of Adams Center on June 30, 1956, in the Adams Center Baptist Church, with Rev. Bernard Schehl officiating. The couple lived in Adams all their married life. Mrs. Richmond died Sept. 4.

Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Penny and Michael Ruhm, Saratoga Springs; three grandsons, Jonah and Caleb Ruhm, Saratoga Springs, and Frankie Schaub, Bedford, New Hampshire; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his wife, he is also predeceased by a daughter, Susan Schaub, who died in 1994 and a sister, Marilyn Wahlstrom.

Donations in his memory may be made to the American Legion Don Rounds Post 586, 10 S. Main St., Adams NY 13605 or the South Jefferson Memorial VFW Post 5344, 3 VFW Drive, Adams, NY 13605. Mr. Richmond was a life member of both organizations as well as a member of the Adams State Road Cemetery Association.
