Edson E.
Robinson, 88, a lifelong resident of Watertown, died Tuesday,
Nov. 8, at his home at Ives Hill Retirement Community.
Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy
Durland Robinson.
The son of Edson E. Robinson and Louise Murray Robinson, Mr.
Robinson graduated in 1942 from Watertown High School.
Mr. Robinson served in the Army during World War II from
1943 until 1945. He was in the second wave of the D Day
Invasion on Normandy Beach, France on June 6, 1944. After
the war, Mr. Robinson returned to St. Lawrence University
and graduated in 1949 earning a bachelor's of arts degree.
Mr. Robinson owned and operated Robinson’s in the Arcade
with his sister, Virginia A. Robinson, from 1949 until her
death in 1968. At that time, Mrs. Robinson joined her
husband in the operation of the store until their retirement
in 1987.
He is also survived by first cousins: Richard R. Robinson
(Janet) Washington, N.C., Jane Ann Carpenter (Ross,
deceased) Birmingham, Ala., Mary Elizabeth Grow (Hon. John
Grow) Rome, N.Y., Theodore Robinson, Albany; a sister-in-law,
Joanne Van Slyke, (Robert, deceased) Watertown, and many
nieces, nephews and second cousins.
Mr. Robinson was predeceased by his first cousin, Dr. Eugene
W. Robinson (Mary Alice Burke), Green Valley, Ariz., in
2003.
Mr. Robinson was an avid golfer and upland bird hunter, and
enjoyed travel, especially to Scotland to play golf. He was
a long time member of the Black River Valley Club and Ives
Hill Country Club.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov.
12, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Watertown, officiated by
Father Walter Giles.
Arrangements are with Cleveland Funeral Home.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of
Jefferson County and Trinity Episcopal Church.
