Mae F. Wetmore

LOWVILLE N.Y.  —  Mae F. Wetmore, 88, a resident of the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, and formerly of Route 12, Lowville, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 8, at the nursing home.   

Born May 9, 1923, in Port Leyden, a daughter of the late Dalton H. and Florence Dippold Field, she graduated in 1940 from Port Leyden High School. She attended Potsdam Normal School/Crane School of Music for one year prior to World War II.  During the war, she worked at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome.  

She was a professional musician in Syracuse after the war. She played and sang with local bands throughout the North Country for many years.  Music was her passion. She was organist, pianist and vocalist for several local churches, choirs and organizations.  

She married Gerald L. Wetmore on June 22, 1946, at Leyden Congregational Church.  

Together with her husband, the couple owned and operated Neff-Field Insurance Agency in Port Leyden until 1971, when they sold the business and purchased Lewis Lanes Bowling Center in Lowville. 

The couple retired in 1982 and spent their winters in Florida. Mr. Wetmore died Oct. 14, 2002.   

Surviving are a son, Andrew G. Wetmore, Lowville; a daughter, Marilyn Wetmore and her husband, Philip A. Scibelli, Choctaw, Okla., and Chase Lake, New York; a brother and his wife, John and Dot Field, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Leanna Wetmore, Jon Wetmore, Christopher and Morgan Harris; a great-grandson, Jackson Harris; nieces, nephews and cousins.  

A brother, Donald Field, died before her.  

Mae has donated her body as an anatomical gift to SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse.  

A Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
