Ellwood S. Stoddard, 91, formerly of Clinton Street, died
Thursday afternoon, Nov. 17, at Lewis County Residential
Healthcare Facility.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at
Beaches Bridge Cemetery with Rev. Evan Zehr officiating.
There will be no calling hours or funeral.
Born Sept. 25, 1920, at home on the family farm in Lowville,
a son of the late Harley E. and Mary Hirshey Stoddard, he
graduated in 1939 from Lowville Academy, and worked at
Climax Manufacturing until 1950, where he met his
wife.
He married Marie K. Grau on March 20, 1942, at the Lowville
United Methodist Church parsonage, with Rev. Corbin
officiating.
In 1950, Mr. Stoddard became an artificial inceminator for
the Lewis County Artificial Breeders Co-Op, and in 1955 the
couple purchased the family dairy farm and sugar bush on
Route 26 in Lowville. In 1970, the couple sold the
farm, and moved to their home on Clinton Street. He
worked for Roes Equipment in Lowville as a parts man after
his retirement from farming.
Mrs. Stoddard died April 13, 2009.
Mr. Stoddard was a member of Lowville United Methodist
Church, where he was an active in volunteering as handyman.
He was a member of Lowville Grange #71, a member of the
former North Country Swingers Square Dance Club, and a
member of the Valley Rounds Round Dance Club. He
enjoyed round and square dancing.
Surviving are two
children, a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Marge
Stoddard, Wake Forest, N.C.; a daughter, Penny Jay, Lowville;
five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers, Alson and H. Richard Stoddard, and a sister,
Louise Becker, all died before him.
