Carl H. Marriott

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Carl Henry Marriott, 87, died Sunday, Nov. 20, at Lewis County General Hospital where he was admitted on Friday.

Born May 31, 1924, in Harrisburg, a son of James Marriott and Maggie Rowe, he was raised on a dairy farm on Tug Hill and was the youngest of 13 children, nine of which lived to adulthood. Carl graduated from Lowville Academy Central School in 1942.  

He served in the United States Navy from 1944 – 1946, obtaining the rank of Seaman First Class, and was awarded American and European Victory Medals. 

He married Marion Elizabeth Dier in 1948 at the Lowville Methodist Church. Marion died in 1993.

Carl owned the first chain saw in Lewis County. He started his own logging and gravel business in 1950, retiring in 1987. He always felt that he had helped build this country and greatly enjoyed all the nice folks he met.  In 1960 he was the only person in Lewis County that owned a ten-wheeled dump truck along with his own gravel pit.  Carl was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling, having many great times at his hunting camp in Montague which he owned for over 40 years. 

Surviving are three daughters and their husbands, Linda Marriott and Rick Massei, Kirkland, Was., Jane and Peter Gordon, Petaluma, Calif., and Susan Marriott and Bryan Richter, Denver, Colo.; along with his only grandchild, Ethan Andreas Richter.

In addition to his parents Carl was predeceased by his five brothers, Egbert Marriott, Emmet Marriott, Gilbert Marriott, Floyd Marriott and Walter Marriott, and his three sisters, Sophrona McDonald, Flossie Waite and Dorothy Smith.

His funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Beth O’Neil, pastor of Lowville United Methodist Church, officiating. Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25.

Burial will be in West Lowville Rural Cemetery.
