John J. Allen

CALCIUM, N.Y.  —  John J. Allen, 79, passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 23, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility where he had resided for two years. 

Mr. Allen is a retired Deputy Fire Chief with the City of Watertown Fire Department. 

Born Aug. 21, 1932, in Watertown, a son of John and Ruby Rivers Carpenter Allen, he graduated from Watertown High School. John served with the Air Force from 1950 to 1954.  

He joined the City of Watertown Fire Department following his honorable discharge from the Air Force. During his time with the department, Chief Allen served as a training officer, arson investigator, and battalion chief and training officer, instrumental in implementing the program to comply with a state law requiring in-service training for the fire department members.  

Mr. Allen was a former member of the Philadelphia American Legion, the Watertown Eagles, and the Northpole Volunteer Fire Department.  

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and gardening. 

John married Muriel Bisig on April 14, 1961, in Rodman.  Mrs. Allen died Sept. 20, 2008. 

Surviving are a son John, Watertown; a daughter, Lisa Fulmer, Texas; five grandchildren; a sister, Celine Tillman, Theresa; a brother, Andrew, Camillus; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Regina (Robert) Overton.  

A brother, James, predeceased him. 

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Beverly Bibbins officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Rodman. A calling hour will be noon to 1 p.m. Monday prior to the service.
