FELTS MILLS, N.Y.  —  Daniel D. Martin Sr., 76, of 24245 Boot Jack Hill, passed Friday, Dec. 9, at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.

A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church followed by military honors. A prayer service will be 9:30 a.m. at the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River.

A private burial will take place at the Felts Mills Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wed., Dec. 14, at the funeral home.

Born Aug. 8, 1935, in Black River, the son of Harland and Mary Howard Martin, he graduated in 1954 from West Carthage High School. 

He entered the Army in January of 1955 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in December of 1957.

He married Virginia R. Dilello of Watertown on March 26, 1955, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Dennis Lynch officiating. The couple has resided in Felts Mills since 1960.

Mr. Martin was a machine operator at NY AirBrake, retiring in 1997. He also owned and operated Martin’s Sanitation from 1970 until 1993.

He was a member of the Felts Mills American Legion, Charter Member for the Felts Mills Fire Department in which he held various positions, secretary/ treasurer of the Rutland Fire District from 1963 until 2010, he was president of Felts Mills Cemetery Association.

He was an avid hunter, enjoyed watching birds and making bird houses and was a Buffalo Bills fan.

Among his survivors are his wife, Virginia R. Martin, Felts Mills; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Daniel D. Martin Jr., Carthage, Kevin J. and Joyce Martin, Felts Mills, and Steven J. and Monika Martin, Deferiet; two daughters and their husbands, Lisa R. and Mark West, Dexter, Tina M. and Vincent Petrillose, Watertown; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Tara Martin; two grandsons, Erik Martin, Lance Martin; two brothers, Russell Martin, Harland Martin; two sisters, Helen Welch and Ida Dupell Thomas, all died before him.
