Edward C. Yancey

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Edward C. Yancey, 95, died Monday, Dec. 12, at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.   

Born Sept. 26, 1916, in the town of Harrisburg, a son of the late Edward E. and Rosella Zehr Yancey, he attended rural school in the town of Harrisburg.   

He married Bertha E. Beyer on Dec. 4, 1940, at the Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Jacob Gingerich officiating.  

Together the couple and owned and operated the family farm on the Yancey Road in the town of Harrisburg. Ed also owned and operated Yancey’s Construction working along with the Conservation Department excavating ponds and ditches with his bulldozer and backhoe during the summer time and logging during the winter. Mrs. Yancey died in September 2000. 

Ed loved to hunt and enjoyed taking trips out west, into Canada and Newfoundland. 

Surviving are  seven children, daughter, Virginia Lyndaker, Lowville, and sons, Herbert, Edward and Arlene, Theodore and Mary, Timothy, Gordon, and John Yancey, all of Lowville; three sisters, Iva Yousey, Lowville, Bertha Roes and Rosella Roes, both of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Lena Yancey, Beaver Falls; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.   

A daughter, Carolyn Malone, a brother, Gerald, and two sisters, Mary Swartzentruber and Edna Zehr, all died before him. 

A celebration of Edward’s life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Evan Zehr, nephew, officiating. Burial will take place 10 a.m. Thursday in Croghan Mennonite Cemetery prior to the memorial service. 

Family and friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Sundquist Funeral Home.
