Elsa Frances
Grant, 93, of Watertown, died Friday, Dec. 16.
Born May 29, 1918, in
South Hammond, the daughter of Jeanette and George Grant who
predeceased her in 1949 and 1950.
Her nearest surviving relatives are Grant B. Northrop of
Easton, Md., and William A. Northrop of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Elsa was an elementary
school teacher for most of her working life and retired from
the Watertown School District in 1976. She taught at several
schools around New York State including South Hammond and
Schenectady before finishing with 28 years at Watertown.
She graduated from
Hammond High School as valedictorian in 1935 and from
Potsdam Normal School in 1939. Subsequent education included
a bachelor's degree in education from Potsdam State
University in 1946 and master's of science degree in 1954.
Elsa was an avid traveler
and made many trips to Europe in connection with continuing
education and visiting relatives in Scotland.
She was active in many Watertown organizations including the
First Presbyterian Church, the American Association of
University Women, the New York State Retired Teachers
Association, the North Country Bird Club, the College
Women’s Club and the Jefferson County Historical Society.
Funeral service will be
held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at First Presbyterian Church.
There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Rarick
Cemetery, South Hammond.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer
Society or charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are with the Cleveland Funeral Home,
Watertown.
