December 18, 2012

WATERTOWN, N.Y.    June S. Benjamin, 85, formerly of Sackets Harbor, Liverpool, Pulaski, Parish, Adams, Henderson, and Clayton passed away Tuesday morning at Samaritan Keep Home where she had been a resident since April 2010.

Born June 28, 1927, the daughter of William H. Sedgemore, Sr. and Jennie Spencer Parker Sedgemore, she graduated in 1945 from Adams Center High School.

Her siblings included Percy Parker, Glenn Parker, Lynn Parker, Grace Parker Lord, Ruth Parker Coffin, Howard Spencer, Kent Spencer, Lydia Spencer Sprague, Edna Spencer Hockey, Eva Spencer Niebuhr Wardale, and William Sedgemore, Jr.

Her first employment was at Watertown's Woolworth lunch counter, and then at Bradley Hardware.

She married Gordon D. Benjamin on June 1, 1947, in the Smithville Baptist church. They enjoyed 53 years together before Gordon passed away.

While Gordon was stationed in the Navy in New London, Conn., June worked in a tooth paste factory. After his discharge they lived on the family farm in Ellisburg. In 1952 they moved to Pulaski and June worked in the bank. They moved to Baldwinsville in 1954 where June was a bank teller, as well. In 1957, the family moved to Hendersonwhere they owned and operated the Valley Stationon Route 3. The station burned in 1963, and June then worked in the office at O.D. Greene Lumber Company. She became a Mary Kay beauty consultant in 1980 and continued when the couple moved to Parish to own and operate a liquor store.

After Gordon's retirement, the snowbird couple purchased homes in Clayton and Brandon, Florida where they enjoyed many years of fun in the sun. Springbrook Apartments in Pulaski was their home when Gordon passed away in 2000. June lived in Liverpool until 2004 when she moved to Sackets Harbor.

June enjoyed being with her large family, modern square dancing, red hatters, cooking, entertaining, organizing get-togethers, playing cards, traveling, and eating out. It seemed that everywhere she went there was a party, including Samaritan Keep Home.

Surviving are a son, Jack (Gayle) Benjamin, Sackets Harbor; two daughters, Jennie (John) Mantle, Sackets Harbor, and Gwen (Patrick) McCarroll, Centennial, Colo.; her grandsons, Shane (Kelly) Greuel, Mick Mantle, and Benjamin (Kimberly Burns) Mantle; a great-grandson, Logan Mantle, Syracuse; and hundreds of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and friends.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at the Adams United Methodist Church. The family will receive guests beginning at 10 a.m.

A committal service will be held in the spring at the family's convenience.

June had so many special interests that it would be difficult to select just one, so please make donations to the charity of your choice.
