CLAYTON, N.Y.  —  M. Joan Slate, 81, of Strawberry Lane, died Monday at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where she had been a patient for eight days. 

There will be no calling hours or funeral service.

Born Nov. 20, 1931, in the town of Orleans, the daughter of the late Clifford and Mary Shipman McDonald, she graduated from Clayton Central School.

She married Francis Slate of Glen Park. He died in Massena in 1981. They lived in Massena for 15 years. After her husband's death, she moved back to Clayton.

Surviving are a daughter, Tina (Rick) Smith and their daughter, Meghan, Newark; a sister, Hilda (Allan) Jackson, Clayton; a brother, John (Bonnie) McDonald, LaFargeville; nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Milton Rusho, Clayton.

A brother, Clifford McDonald Jr., and three sisters, Doris Jackson, Dorothy Reff and Helen Rusho all of Clayton, all died before her.
