Anthony C. Monnat

December 19, 2011

CROGHAN, N.Y.  —  Anthony C. Monnat, 88, formerly of 6908 William St. Croghan, died December 17, 2011 at the Lewis County Extended Care Facility, Lowville, where he had resided since Oct. 31, 2006. He had been in failing health for several years.

“Clem” as he was known to all, was born Aug. 9, 1923, in New Bremen, son of Leo J. and Minnie Nortz Monnat. He graduated from Father Leo Memorial School in 1941. After graduation, he worked as a civilian employee at Sampson Naval Training Station in Geneva, N.Y., as well as the U.S. Rubber Company in Beaver Falls.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Monnat served in the Army from February 1943 until his honorable discharge in January 1946. He was a member of Headquarters Battery 13th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Group and was stationed in the Northern Solomon and Philippine Islands.

After returning home, he was employed in the laboratory at Latex Products for several years.  He left there to work for his brother at Monnat’s Country Store and finished his working career at Beaverite Products, Inc.

He married Rita M. Farney on Aug. 15, 1953, at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan with Fr. Fintan A. Murphy officiating. Mrs. Monnat passed away Sept. 6, 1996.

The game of baseball played a large role in his life. From 1946 to the mid-1950’s he was a pitcher for the “Croghan All Stars” semi-professional team. This period was at the height of popularity of local “town team” baseball and it was not unusual for games to draw large crowds of spectators from miles around. Clem also coached Little League, Pony League and American Legion youth baseball teams in the Croghan area for many years.

In addition to his passion for baseball, he was an ardent fan of both Syracuse University and the University of Notre Dame football and basketball teams.

He was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan.  He was a member of the Beaver River Memorial American Legion Post No. 1663 in Croghan and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2175.

Surviving are three sons and their spouses, Joseph and Laura Monnat, Lowville, James and Angela Monnat, Fairport, and John and Amy Monnat, Lowville; and five grandchildren.

Two sisters, LaMoine Martin and Suzanne Martin, two brothers, J. Robert Monnat and Richard Monnat and a granddaughter, Sara Monnat, all died before him.

A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan with Rev. Daniel Chapin, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Croghan with military honors conducted by the Croghan American Legion.
