Imelda W. "Benny" Glenn

LOWVILLE, N.Y.  —  Imelda W. “Benny” Glenn, 91, formerly of Valley View Courts, passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 3, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility.

A funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, with Rev. Christopher Carrara officiating. Spring burial will be in Beaches Bridge Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. 

Arrangements are with the Sundquist Funeral Home.

Born Sept. 13, 1918, in New Bremen, a daughter of the late Charles N. and Mary Pauline “Lena” Mattis Wagner, “Benny” graduated in 1935 from Lowville Free Academy. She then continued her schooling at the Watertown Business School graduating in 1938. 

She first worked at Lewis County General Hospital as a switchboard operator and then moved on to the Lewis County Board of Elections where she retired as commissioner of that board.

On Dec. 14, 1942, “Benny” was united in marriage with Edward L. Glenn at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with Rev. Hyacinth Barnhardt, OFM, officiating. The couple made their home on the Glenn homestead on the Hodge Road. Edward died June 15, 1983. 

For more than 20 years, “Benny” has lived at Valley View Courts in Lowville.

“Benny” was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, keeping detailed scrapbooks over the years and being with her family. 

Mrs. Glenn is survived by two sons and their wives, Thomas E. and Judy, Michael C. and Joan; all of Lowville, a daughter and her husband, Ann and William Becker, Lowville; a sister, Helen Glenn, New Bremen; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Three brothers, Arthur M., Charles F. and infant, Francis Wagner and three sisters, Mary Ransiear, Laurene Houppert and Katherine Grimmer, all died before her.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of “Benny” to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Shady Avenue, Lowville, NY 13367 or to a charity of one’s choice.
