SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y.
— Mary Ellen Powers, 75, Sackets Harbor, passed away
unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, Dec. 5.
Born Feb. 18, 1935, in Lowville, the daughter of Floyd and Marie Hanno Loson,
she grew up on Easton Street in Lowville and graduated in
1953 from Lowville Academy. She graduated Cum Laude from Potsdam State University with a
bachelor's of science in music education. She then went on to earn her Masters of Science Degree in education from Crane School of Music.
She married James S. Powers on Dec. 18, 1954, at St. Peter’s Church in Lowville.
Mary Ellen was a music teacher at Sackets Harbor Central School from 1961 until her retirement in 1993. During her career, she directed several musicals including H.M.S. Pinafore, Oliver and many others.
Her proudest accomplishment was when she directed the Sackets Harbor Sentinels Marching Band. Under her leadership, the band won countless awards throughout New York State. The band was selected to perform at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C., Disney World in Orlando,
Fla., and the Gator Bowl.
After her retirement, Mary Ellen and her husband Jim, ran an Antique business called “Main-ly Antiques” for many years. Antiques were her passion and she loved nothing more than a good auction.
Mary Ellen’s other loves and passions were family and shopping. She most especially cherished spending time with her 5 grandchildren. In the last few years, she devoted herself to the community in Sackets Harbor and to her neighbors on Washington Place. She and her husband helped coordinate the landscaping and floral arrangements throughout the Village.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, James; three children, Gary and his wife Cindy,
Manlius, Kathy, Dewitt, and Julie and her husband Dennis,
Carthage; her five very special grandchildren, Zachary, Whitney, Joshua, Natalie and
Hailey; a brother, Alfred E. Loson, Newark , N.Y.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown. The funeral will be held
11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at St. Andrews Church in Sackets Harbor. The burial will take place
1:30 p.m. Thursday in Lowville Rural Cemetery.
