TOWN OF PAMELIA  A 46-year-old man was killed late Wednesday night after his vehicle left the east shoulder of Route 37 near Graham Road and struck a tree head-on, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Jefrrey A. Murtha, of 22549 Willowbrook Dr., was northbound at about 10:30 p.m. when his pickup truck left the roadway for an unknown reason and crashed in a residential yard at 24456 Route 37, Deputy E.J. Coseo said.

Mr. Murtha was extricated from the vehicle after firefighters used hydraulic tools. He was taken by Guilfoyle Ambulance to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where he was later pronounced dead, the deputy said.

Members of the North Pole Fire Department assisted deputies at the scene.

A helicopter was requested by Guilfoyle staff at 10:59 p.m., but was unavailable, according to scanner traffic.
