Stolen Greyhound Bus Recovered in Town of Watertown

WATERTOWN, N.Y. —   Jefferson County sheriff's deputies located a stolen 2009 Greyhound bus worth $500,000 disabled at 6:49 a.m. Christmas morning on Route 11 near Cagwin Road in the town of Watertown.

A man was found a short distance from the unoccupied bus and claimed to be the operator, deputies said.

Andrew T. Hickey, 39, of 4 Rolling Way, Apt. H, Peekskill, N.Y., was charged at 7:26 a.m. Sunday with second-degree criminal possession of stolen property and first-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle, both felonies. 

He was arraigned before Town of Watertown Justice James P. McClusky who sent him to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building with bail set at $20,000 cash. 

According to police documents, the bus was observed on security video pulling out of the Regional Transportation Center, 131 Alliance Bank Parkway, Syracuse, at about 4:53 a.m. Sunday. The bus company's headquarters in Dallas, Texas, electronically deactivated the bus at 6:49 a.m. at which time it became inoperable on Route 11 in the town of Watertown.

Mr. Hickey told deputies he was cold and found the bus running in the parking lot of the Regional Transportation Center. He allegedly decided to take the bus to visit a co-worker in the Watertown, deputies said.
