Woman Hospitalized After Vehicle Strikes Utility Pole

N.Y. — Over
1,500 National Grid customers on the south side of Watertown lost power
Wednesday afternoon after a motorist passed out behind the wheel and struck a
utility pole causing it to snap, according to Watertown police.
Gloria Rothschild, 83, of 1316 Sherman St., was southbound in the 1200
block of Sherman
Street at about 2:10 p.m. when her 2007 Nissan sedan went off the right side
of street onto the sidewalk passing between a utility pole and fence
sideswiping the pole, police said.
The car then struck a second utility pole head-on causing it to shear, continued to travel over a stop sign, crossed Barben Avenue, went over a curb
and came to rest against a tree in a yard at 1304 Sherman St., according to
an accident report.
Ms. Rothschild was transported by Guilfoyle Ambulance to Samaritan Medical
Center was she was treated for chest pain, police said.
She told police she may have "fell asleep" or lost consciousness for
a second, and when she awoke may have hit the gas pedal, police wrote in a

Officers were assisted at the scene by city firefighters, Guilfoyle Ambulance,
National Grid and the
city's Department of Public Works.
