SENATE PASSES BILL TO TRANSFER MUNICIPAL ARENA
TO TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA

June 18, 2007

ALBANY   The state Senate passed legislation today sponsored by Senator Jim Wright that would authorize the Village of Alexandria Bay to transfer ownership of the Alexandria Bay Municipal Arena to the Town of Alexandria. Both the village and town passed resolutions requesting Senator Wright to sponsor this home rule legislation.

"I am pleased to support this legislation, which provides the state authorization for this transfer to take place," said Senator Wright. "The municipal arena serves as a popular recreational venue for families in northern Jefferson County. The agreement between the Village and the Town, along with the pending upgrades, will enhance the facility and ensure that it will continue to be utilized by the community year-round."

Earlier this year, the Village of Alexandria Bay and the Town of Alexandria entered into an inter municipal agreement regarding the operation of the arena. With the increased and expanded use of the arena by residents of both the Village and the outlying areas of the Town of Alexandria, the Town agreed to assume operational expenses of the arena. Because this is recreational property, under New York State law, legislation is required to authorize the transfer.

In September of last year, Senator Wright secured $175,000 for repairs to the Alexandria Bay Municipal Arena.
