Update from Carthage Central about Black River Elementary evacuation

BLACK RIVER, NY — The Black River Elementary building was evacuated this morning when an alarm activated. Students arriving at school were held on the buses and moved to the evacuation site at the church next door.

The alarm was likely triggered by a vehicle that was left running outside the building with fumes drawn into the building. The Black River Fire Department arrived along with National Grid and  determined the building was safe for occupancy.

The students were sent home as a precaution.

The faculty and staff are to be commended for their efforts today. Teachers and other support staff stayed on the buses during this time. Some of the teachers and support staff volunteered to ride the buses to ensure students were dropped off at a location with adult supervision.

School will resume as scheduled on Friday, November 30, 2018.
