Wadyslawa W. “Lottie” Szewil, 91, W. Martinsburg

LOWVILLE, NY — Wadyslawa W. “Lottie” Szewil, 91, died Friday, August 3, 2018, at her home in West Martinsburg.

Mrs. Szewil was born on June 2, 1927, in Poland, the daughter of the late John and Theresa (Krokosz) Cierniak. As a young girl she was captured by the German Army while riding her bicycle and was sent to a concentration camp during World War II.

She married Teodor Szewil on August 18, 1945 in Germany. She worked for Gerald and John Fogarty Laundry, the Martinsburg Nursing Home for Edith Arthur, and helped at her son, Michael’s farm. Lottie and Teodor made their home on the West Road. Teodor died on June 20, 2006.

Lottie enjoyed the outdoors, spending time on her flower gardens around the house, and the vegetable garden. She canned and did home made preserves, and loved cooking.

She is survived by a son, John and Cheryl Szewil of Lowville;a daughter-in-law, Helen Szewil; five grandchildren, Christina (Chris) Letham, Teresa Reder, Holly (Tim) Hanno, Deborah (Cole) Mullin, Theodore (Cindy) Szewil; and her five great grandchildren; two sisters, Veronica Dziki and Bronislawa Wszolock, of Poland.

Two sons, Michael E. Szewil, and Stanley B. Szewil, a sister, Jeanett Woizydnoig and three brothers John, Frank, and Edward Cierniak, all died before her.

Calling hours for family and friends will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018 at the Sundquist Funeral Home.

A funeral Mass will be said 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Houseville, with Rev. Lawrence Marullo, officiating. Burial will follow in Martinsburg Cemetery.
