August brought pain at the pump with prices over $4 per gallon
BUFFALO, NY — The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $4.08, down 2 cents from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.19. The New York State average is $4.21, up 5 cents from last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.18. AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:
• Batavia – $4.20 (up 2 cents from last Monday)
• Buffalo – $4.22 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
• Elmira – $4.07 (up 7 cents from last Monday)
• Ithaca – $4.22 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
• Rochester – $4.24 (up 1 cent from last Monday)
• Rome – $4.23 (up 2 cents from last Monday)
• Syracuse – $4.16 (up 2 cents from last Monday)
• Watertown – $4.24 (up 4 cents from last Monday)
For the first time ever, the national average gas price in August has been above $4 per gallon every day. This month is poised to set a new record as the most expensive August at the pump, surpassing the previous August record set in 2022. There’s been little movement on the crude oil front. Due to continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, crude oil prices remain elevated. This morning, oil prices range from $85 to $90 per barrel.
According to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand is on the rise while total domestic gasoline supply is down, and gasoline production is up.
Despite elevated fuel prices, Labor Day travel is expected to be strong with travelers taking advantage of the last long holiday weekend of the summer season.
Diesel prices are stable with the national average at $5.60, down a penny from last week. Last year at this time, the national average price for diesel fuel was $3.70. The New York average for diesel fuel is $5.74, up 4 cents from last week, and up from $3.90 last year.
When it comes to EV charging, the national average for L2 commercial electricity remains steady. Today’s national average per kilowatt-hour of electricity at a public EV charging station is 42 cents. New York’s rate is 40 cents. The state is home to 20,671 chargers. An estimated 1.2 million AAA members live in households with one or more electric vehicles. To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage, while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car, since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
