CLAYTON, NY — Audrey D. Bender, 87, Clayton, passed away Monday morning, May 27, 2019, at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown.
A calling hour will be held 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. with Pastor Donald Briant presiding. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery following the service.
Born May 15, 1932, in Watertown, the daughter of Howard and Isabel Terry Danough, she attended Clayton schools.
She married Charles R. Bender on July 1, 1951, at the Clayton United Methodist Church. He passed on Dec. 13, 2006.
She was a top selling Avon representative for many years, receiving many Presidents Club awards, including a trip to Hawaii. She was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church and the Colon-Couch American Legion Post 821 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed scrapbooking of local history and researching family ancestry. She and her husband Charles traveled extensively in the US and abroad. They were also founding members of the Clayton Diving Club.
Audrey is survived by her five children, Janet B. Ferguson and companion, John M. Schleher, Clayton, Dennis H. and Carol Bender, LaPush, WA, Ray P. Bender, Clayton, Holly J. and Dee Coburn, Port Angeles, WA, and Rebecca J. and Craig Dodge, Watertown; daughter-in-law, Kandy Bender, Clayton; 21 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; three siblings, Robert J. and Joyce Danough, Camden, Michael J. and Kathy Danough, CA, and Lois A. Clark and companion Joe Metzger, McConnellsville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Along with her husband, Charles, Audrey was predeceased by her daughter, Julie S. Bender, May 22, 2014, a son, Robert C., Jan. 27, 2019, two grandchildren, and two sisters, Sandra O. Hinckley Knight and Zellah Whattam.
