Carthage Central announces Class of 2019 leaders

CARTHAGE, NY — On behalf of the Carthage Central School District, HS Principal Kathaleen Beattie is pleased to announce its academic leaders for the Class of 2019.

Our Valedictorian is Carlton Huff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sean and Barbara Huff of Carthage, NY and our Salutatorian is Lucas Piroli, son of LTC (ret) Thomas and Lori Piroli of Black River.

As the top students in the class, Carlton achieved a 3 3⁄4 year overall average of a 99.331%. and Lucas achieved a 3 3⁄4 year overall average of 99.244%. The Carthage CSD extends its congratulations to the Huff and Piroli families and recognizes their continued dedication to education and the Carthage School Community.

Ranked first in his class, Carlton has been recognized for his academic standing by being on the High Honor Roll for all four years of high school. A member of the National Honor Society, his additional academic accolades include the JCC Presidential List [11th & 12th grade] and Whiz Quiz Team Captain [12th].

As a prominent contributor to our Fine Arts program, Carlton’s participation as a talented musician included his performances as a bass player, a piano player, and a percussionist. Over the years, he has been awarded various praises for his musical talents including various Bi-County/ Area All-State ensembles
(10th-12th), NYSSMA Solo Festival (9th-11th), Tri-M Music Honor Society (12th), and the JLCMTA (Jefferson-Lewis County Music Teachers’ Association) Senior Soloist [12th]. Carlton’s commitment to honing his craft as a musician/performer has been illustrated by his continued efforts via Piano Lessons with Heidi
Lehmann [5th – 12th], Double bass lessons with Karl Doty (New England Conservatory alum) [August 2017-August 2018] and additional instruction from his future Professor, James VanDemark, of the Eastman School of Music [August 2018-January 2019]. He also studied at the Crane Youth Music Summer Camp
[Summer 2017 & 2018], belonged to the Strings Club (12th), and was the bass player in the school production of Footloose [12th]. His acting performances included Dr. Kelekian in Whit [11th] and Fagin in Oliver [11th].

In addition to his academic and artistic talents, Carlton participated in soccer as a JV player [9th grade], Varsity player [10th – 12th], and Team Captain [12th]. His soccer performance also earned him Frontier League All-star status [12th]. Carlton was also a member of the Varsity Tennis team [10th & 12th]. He was
active in several extra-curricular groups including Key Club (9th-12th, Member of the Month 11th), French Club [9th-12th], WPBS Whiz Quiz Team Member [9th-12th, 2x U.S. Runners-Up], and 7 News Arts All-Star [12th].

Even with all of his other responsibilities, Carlton dedicated time to extensively engage himself in hundreds of hours of community service as a member of the Carthage HS Key Club, which dedicates itself to empowering young people to become active citizens. His other contributions to the community included
playing bass for the music worship team at the North Country Fellowship Church, being a piano teacher, and serving as a middle school math tutor.

The District wishes Carlton great success in the future as he attends the Eastman School of Music for double bass performance, with the goal of playing the double bass professionally in an orchestral setting.

As the Salutatorian of the Class of 2019, Lucas Piroli has been an active member of the school community.

He has received numerous awards including, Carthage Elks Club Student of the Month-September 2018 [12th], 7News Academic All-Star [12th], High Honor Roll [9th-12th], and Celebrate Freedom Foundation JROTC Award for Excellence in Academics [11th] and the American Legion JROTC Academic Excellence
Award [10th].

As a student-athlete, Lucas has been named Captain for the varsity sports’ teams on which he is a player this year [12th], including a second year as Captain for Varsity Lacrosse [11th]. As a member of the Varsity Football [11th & 12th], Basketball [11th & 12th], and Lacrosse [8th -12th] teams, he excelled and received the 19th Annual Central New York Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Award (12th) and was twice named both Frontier League All-Star and First Team All-Northern NY for Lacrosse [10th-11th].

In addition to his academic and athletic contributions, Lucas was also actively involved in Student Government [9th-12th], Class of 2019 Vice President [10th-12th] Spanish Club [10th -12th]. Member of the National Honor Society [11th & 12th], Math League participant [8th-12th], member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps [9th-12th], and a Company Commander [12th]. He also was an altar server at St. Paul’s Catholic Church and assisted with our Adaptive PE classes during his junior year.

Attending College at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland, Lucas will be pursuing a major in finance and joining the Men’s Lacrosse team, who have been 12-time DIII National Champions.

The District wishes Lucas great success in the future as a member of the Salisbury University Class of 2023.

With their families, friends, and District staff in attendance, an afternoon reception honoring these scholars was held on Wednesday, May 8th, sponsored by the Carthage Central School District and the Robert G. Wallace Chapter of the National Honor Society. Award plaques and gifts were presented.
