WINTER SPRINGS, FL — Charles F. Matthews, 87, Winter Springs, FL, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2026, at his home.
Charles was born Jan. 27, 1939, son of the late Charles and Gladys Matthews. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1957. He married Carolyn A Smith on June 27, 1959. Carolyn passed away July 24,2024.
Charles worked for many years as an ironworker for Riverside Ironworks in Gouverneur NY. He also was a volunteer fireman and EMT for Hammond Fire Department and served on the Hammond Village Board.
After retirement Charles spent many years enjoying retirement with his wife of over 60 years. They enjoyed traveling, summers on the St. Lawrence River and playing golf. He loved his visits from his children and grandchildren as well as his grand pups Molly, Hettie, and Riley.
Charles is survived by Four Children, Stephen and Brenda Matthews, Apopka FL, Shelley Matthews, New Smyrna Beach FL, Sandra Grausam, New Smyrna Beach FL and Bradley and Laurie Matthews Homer, NY; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Stephanie (Lawson Duff)and Nick Matthews, Katie (Chad)Lee, Mary Grausam, Jennifer Grausam (Matt Bushnell) and Nathan Matthews; eight great grandchildren, Madelyn, Layla, Penelope, Levi, Jayden, Liberty, Evan and Asher. He is also survived by his siblings Peggy and Ken Chambers, Janet and Pete Wheater, Jerry and Amy Matthews, and Jeff Mathews who resided with him for the past year. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides being predeceased by his wife and parents, he was also predeceased by his son in law James Grausam and great grandson Robert.
Per Charles wishes, there will be no services.
