Christopher A. Mayo, 67, Clayton

CLAYTON, NY —  There will be a Celebration of Life for Mr. Christopher A. Mayo (Sonny), 67, of Clayton, starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2021, at the C-Way Restaurant in Clayton. Mr. Mayo died June 3, 2021.

Sonny was born Feb. 10, 1954, in Maywood, CA, the son of Robert and Helen Wise Mayo. He attended elementary school at Craig Hill School in California, and Greece-Athena High School in Rochester after his family moved there. As a kid, Sonny and his family, summered in the Cape Vincent area.

After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Hawaii as a Mechanic Maintenance Helper being honorably discharged on Dec. 22, 1973.

While in Rochester, Sonny worked at the J.J. Auto Scrap Yard, then he became a Cook for the Burgundy Basin Restaurant. Moving to Clayton a little over 20 years ago, he worked as a Cook for the Dockside in Alexandria Bay, O’Brien’s in Clayton, and in recent summers, he worked at the C-Way Motel and Golf Course and was a Cook during the winters at the Pelican Preserve Country Club in Fort Meyers Florida.

Sonny enjoyed fishing, where his favorite spot was Eagle Wings, and especially riding his Harley. He loved going to Potters Beach, where he enjoyed playing water games with the kids.

Sonny was his own man, living by his own standards and rules. In reality, his
rough, gruff exterior was a great cover for his gentle heart. While he was not
concerned with pleasing anyone, he did earn respect for his fearless insistence
that there was only one way of life for him. He lived that life to the fullest.

Surviving are three brothers, Tim of Rochester, Mark of Arizona, and Todd of California; a sister, Susan Cassidy, California; and a great friend John Lanzione of Clayton; nieces and nephews.

A brother, Robert of Arizona, died before him.

Arrangements are with the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton.
