Job Summary: The Safety & Environmental Coordinator will provide leadership in support of the Development Authority’s commitment to environmental stewardship and safety program management.  The Safety & Environmental Coordinator is responsible for the planning, execution, and assessment of employee safety and environmental compliance programs and will provide support to the Authority’s operating divisions to aide them in meeting or exceeding all environmental and safety regulations.  The Safety & Environmental Coordinator will provide procurement and technical oversight of consultants hired by the Authority for environmental and safety related services.  The Safety & Environmental Coordinator will be a subject matter expert with respect to NYSDEC and USEPA environmental regulations as well as OSHA, PESH, and NFPA regulations.  The Safety and Environmental Coordinator will be required to perform frequent day travel in the Authority’s service areas.

Qualifications:

(Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Expertise of application federal, state and local environmental and safety regulations.

  • Strong computer skills required. Proficiency in MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Knowledge of GIS, GPS, and SCADA beneficial.

  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage, adjust, and prioritize varied workload based on such factors as work objectives, schedule, and customer needs.

  • Strong supervisory skills necessary to oversee and provide daily direction to the Safety & Environmental Technician.

  • Ability to evaluate risks and make sound judgements based on analysis and data.

  • Ability to work with a variety of internal and external customers in a team environment; including close coordination with the Landfill Superintendent on Landfill Gas Operation and the Director of Human Resources.

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Industrial or Environmental Engineering, Public Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or other equivalent field required.

Professional Certification/Licenses:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred; ability to obtain CSP within one year required.

 Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a similar capacity.

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be deemed acceptable.
