RODMAN, NY — Bring your unwanted hardcover books for recycling, learn about the expansion at the regional landfill and see what else the Development Authority of the North Country does at its annual open house at the regional Materials Management Facility in Rodman on August 22 from 4-6 p.m.
For the first time, visitors are being offered the opportunity to bring hardcover books they no longer want to the open house for recycling. Paperback books may already be included with your normal recycling items, but hardcover books typically must be disposed of in the landfill as waste. Two years ago the Development Authority purchased a machine that removes the binding and covers from hardcover books, allowing the pages to be recycled and therefore diverting tons of paper waste from the landfill. The Authority works in partnership with the Northern New York Library System to recycle hardcover library books, but there are limited opportunities for residents to recycle their personal books.
Guided bus tours of the facility will be available and a highlight of the tour this year will be viewing the construction of new part of the landfill, which began late last summer. Exhibits will explain how the new landfill cells will be built.
There will also be Authority division and vendor exhibits including live birds of prey, recycling information, and hands-on activities for kids. Visitors will also get a close-up look at equipment that is used to operate the landfill facility.
