Deputies: 42-year-old man dies in ATV collision with truck in the town of Brownville

WATERTOWN, NY —  The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement later Friday night, June 25, 2021:

“At approximately 3:09 p.m. this afternoon, the Jefferson County Office of Fire & Emergency Management received a 911 call reporting a personal injury motor vehicle accident that occurred on State Route 12E in the town of Brownville.  Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find a collision between a 2021 Dodge Ram pick-up truck towing a camper trailer, and an unregistered Yamaha Raptor 4-wheeler.

Initial investigation reveals that the operator of the 4-wheeler, identified as Phillip D. LaValley, age 42, of the town of Pamelia, entered the roadway from a stopped position into the path of the oncoming truck/camper combination operated by Carl J. Militello, age 62, of Whitesboro, NY.

The collision resulted in the death of Mr. LaValley, who was not wearing a helmet.

An off duty Border Patrol officer as well as an off duty paramedic passed by shortly after the incident occurred and attempted to render aid, but Mr. LaValley was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Town of Brownville Fire Department, Dexter Fire Department, Guilfoyle Ambulance Service, and the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain.

No tickets have been issued, and the investigation is continuing.”
