WATERTOWN, NY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motorcycle accident in the town of Ellisburg.
On Wednesday, Aug. 21, at approximately 9:40 p.m. Travis W. Johnston, age 44, of Cantonment, Florida, was riding northbound on US Route 11 near the intersection of Kirby Place.
While attempting to pass other motorcycles Johnston failed to negotiate a curve, exited the roadway and crashed, deputies said. Two of the motorcyclists passed by Johnston then collided with each other and crashed as well.
Christopher J. Carr, age 47, Adams Center, was was transported to Samaritan Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained when his motorcycle collided with a motorcycle operated by William P. Johnston II, age 30, of Watertown, who was uninjured.
Travis Johnston died at the scene, deputies said.
The investigation is ongoing and excessive speed is a contributing factor.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Police, South Jeff Ambulance, and Mannsville Fire Department.
