WATERTOWN, NY — Doris Helen VanTassel Steele went to be with her Lord on June 27, 2019, at Samaritan Summit Village at the age of 91.
Mrs. Steele was born Aug. 29, 1927, in Alexandria Bay, the oldest of four children born to William and Ethel (Joyner) Van Tassel.
Doris met Desmond Steele in Watertown, NY. They were married Oct. 18, 1947, at High Street Assembly of God in Watertown, NY.
Their children are Donald (LaJuana) Steele, Tyler, TX; Deanna Steele Freeman,
Watertown, NY; Dennis (Mary) Steele, Watertown, NY; Daniel (Cathy) Steele, Ogdensburg, NY; Debra Steele (Tom) Saur, Watertown, NY; Donna Steele Eno, Watertown, NY; Terry McCormick, West Palm Beach, FL, and many others that Mom considered her adopted children.
Doris graduated from Alexandria Bay High School. She went to work as a nanny in New York City then worked as a bookkeeper. She became a gifted homemaker and mom to her six children and many other Fresh Air kids and foster children.
Later she worked in Food Services at Immaculate Heart Central, then at Holy Family Elementary School.
Her beloved grandchildren are Shana Steele, Tyler TX; Jenny Steele Romines (Michael) Tyer, TX; Amanda Freeman Cyriacks (Dennis) Liverpool, NY; Melissa Steele Murray (Brian) Bluffton, SC; Jonathan Steele (Leah) Chaumont, NY; Christie Lucia Steele Leija (Fidencio) Portland, OR; Danelle Steele, Ogdensburg, NY; Michael Desmond Steele, Casper, WY; Erica Saur Thompson (Seth) Cortland, NY; Talitha Saur Walker (Theodore) Watertown, NY; Corey Eno, Charleston, SC; Nicole Eno Zajac (Joshua), Tulsa, OK.
Her precious great-grandchildren are Benjamin and Madelyn Romines, Jakob Romines, Meghan Romines, Raegen White, Paige White, Tassie White, Dennis Cyriacks, Joslynn Cyriacks, Chase Murray, Austin Murray, Eva Steele, Luciana Leija, Bellina Leija, Micah Steele, Zoe Steele, Henry Steele, Caleb Thompson, Madison Thompson, Madalyn Thompson, Jayda Walker, Olivia Walker, Maya Walker, Lydia Eno, Isaac Eno, Jude Zajac, Noah Zajac, Samuel Zajac.
Mrs. Steele was preceded in death by her husband Desmond Steele, her parents, her sister Betty Van Tassel, her brother Donald Van Tassel.
She is survived by a sister, Emily Van Tassel LaFazia, and sister-in-law, Sally
The funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 29th, at First Baptist Church, Watertown, NY. Burial will follow the service in Dexter Cemetery. Calling hours will be held 4 yo 7 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, 632 State St., Watertown.
