Dupee named principal of Knickerbocker Elementary School

WATERTOWN, NY — The Watertown City School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Janelle Dupee as the new Principal of Knickerbocker Elementary School, effective September 22, 2025. The appointment was approved at today’s Board of Education meeting.

Mrs. Dupee brings 22 years of experience in education with a strong focus on student-centered leadership to her new role. Having previously served as Principal of Knickerbocker Elementary before joining the General Brown Central School District three years ago, her return marks an exciting homecoming for both Janelle and the Knickerbocker Elementary community. She has spent 11 years in leadership roles, guiding school improvement and innovation, including 8 years with the Watertown City School District.

Expressing her excitement about returning to the district, Janelle Dupee said, “I am incredibly excited to return ‘home’ to Knickerbocker Elementary and the Watertown City School District. This community holds a special place in my heart, and I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, engaged families, and wonderful students to continue building upon the school’s strong foundation of academic excellence and positive culture. Together, we will ensure every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

Commenting on the appointment, Dr. Larry C. Schmiegel, Superintendent of Schools, stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Dupee back to the Watertown City School District family. Mrs. Janelle Duppee has led the implementation of research-based instructional programs and progress monitoring systems throughout her career. She is experienced in mentoring and developing new teachers for long-term success and skilled in building strong relationships with staff, students, families, and the community. She is committed to fostering a positive school culture and maintaining high expectations for all, with a proven ability to analyze data, set goals, and drive measurable academic growth.
