DWI crackdown over July 4th holiday

WATERTOWN, NY — Jefferson County STOP-DWI announced today that Jefferson County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving.

The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on Wednesday, July 4th and will end on Sunday, July 8. Americans love to celebrate the Fourth of July with family, friends, food and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on the nation’s roads. The fact is, this iconic American holiday is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to drunk-driving crashes.  Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.  Sobriety checkpoints play a key part in raising awareness about the problem.

The New York State Police, County Sheriff and municipal law enforcement agencies will collaborate across the state and will be out in force in this coordinated effort to aggressively target those who put lives in danger.

The Fourth of July Crackdown Period is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Association. The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets Labor Day Weekend, Halloween, and the national Holiday Season in December.

“Our message is simple”, said Rick Barrisford, Jefferson County STOP-DWI Coordinator. “Enjoy the festivities of this Fourth Of July Weekend; but plan ahead and always keep safety in mind, … Don’t drive impaired by alcohol or drugs.”

Violators can lose their licenses; pay increased insurance rates; may have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle; pay fines and surcharges as well as DMV fees.”
