Edith E. Marsala, 91, Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — Edith E. Marsala, 91, Watertown, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at Samaritan Keep Home with her family by her side.

Calling hours will be held 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Holy Family Church followed by the funeral Mass celebrated at noon with Rev. Mickey Demo, pastor, presiding. Burial in Glenwood Cemetery will be at the family’s convenience.

Edie was born in Watertown on April 10, 1928, daughter of Sheldon and Marguerite Bogart Ouderkirk. She was a 1946 graduate of Watertown High School.

She married Charles J. “Chuck” Marsala on Sept. 3, 1946, in Watertown. He passed on July 3, 2010.

With her husband, Chuck, and Rev. Ray Wertman she was a co-founder of Credo Community Center.

She served as the Administrator for several years and then became the budget director until she retired in 1990. She was one of three board members that was given Emeritus status, serving both on the Operating Board and Foundation Board for Credo. She was a first recipient of the Marsala/Wertman award for outstanding service in the field of substance abuse and rehabilitation. This award is given
annually to someone in the community that makes a difference in this field.

In her early years, she worked in the cafeteria at Holy Family School. Edie was a communicant of Holy Family Church, a member of its Altar Rosary Society, and was active in bingo and religious education at the church. She was also very active in her community volunteering for numerous organizations and worked on several campaigns for the Republican Party.

She enjoyed playing tennis, golfing, bowling, boating, dancing, skiing, and traveling. Along with her husband and family she greatly enjoyed their summer home in Westminster Park on Wellesley Island

Edie is survived by her son and his wife, David G. and Debra R. Marsala, Watertown; her daughter and her husband, Diane L. and David P. Brennan, Williamsville, her brother-in-law, Frank Beck; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews,
and cousins.

Along with her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Cynthia A. Marsala, December 8, 2001, two sons, Greg A., June 30, 2012, and Kris D., November 8, 2018; a brother, Clifford Ouderkirk, and sister-in-law, Geraldine Marsala Beck June 22, 2014.
