WATERTOWN, NY — Elizabeth F. “Betty” Oakes, 99, formerly of Logan Street and Northland Estates, passed away at Samaritan Summit Village where she has been a resident.
Mrs. Oakes was born Dec. 11, 1919, in Ogdensburg, a daughter of William and Ella Mallette Fleetham. Mrs. Oakes graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and Wallace Secretarial School.
She was employed as a secretary to the radiologist and a registered x-ray technician at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital for twelve years until her marriage.
On Sept. 20, 1952, she married Theodore C. Oakes at Notre Dame Rectory, Ogdensburg, NY, by Msgr. A.D. Charbonneau. After her marriage the couple moved to Watertown. Mr. Oakes died April 30, 2003.
Mrs. Oakes was employed by Drs. Sickels, Cosgrove and McCreary. Now known as Northern Radiology, as an x-ray technician before joining her husband in his advertising business, T.C. Oakes Advertising. She worked with her husband until her retirement and was a communicant of Holy Family Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Oakes and Sheila (Roger) Szurek, all of Watertown, a grandson, Matthew Abare, Norfolk, VA, a nephew Richard (Kathleen) Pagano, Chittenango, several great nieces and great nephews.
Five brothers, including an infant, and a sister died before her.
An hour of calling will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Holy Family Church followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Thursday with Reverend Steven Murray officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Glenwood Cemetery.
