Fatal garage fire in Deferiet

DEFERIET, NY —  The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with an investigation into a fatal structure fire that occurred in Deferiet Thursday evening.

On December 17 at approximately 4:37pm, Fire and EMS were dispatched to a garage fire at 88 Riverside Drive in the village of Deferiet.

The detached garage was fully engulfed upon arrival.

After bringing the fire under control, fire personnel discovered the body of an adult male in the garage.

The Sheriff’s Office anticipates confirmation of the victim’s identity through postmortem examination scheduled for later today.

His name will be withheld until next of kin notification can be made.

State Fire investigators were called to the scene to assist with identifying the origin of the fire. No determination has been made at this time. Two dogs found at the scene were secured by fire personnel and later released to the Town of Wilna Dog Warden.

National Grid is currently restoring power to surrounding homes.

Other agencies also assisting in this investigation include: Deferiet Fire, Natural Bridge Fire, Great Bend Fire, Carthage Fire, West Carthage Fire, North Pole Fire, Fort Drum Fire, Carthage Ambulance, Natural Bridge Ambulance, West Carthage Police, Cleveland Services, and the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
