Fatal UTV crash in town of Lyme

CHAUMONT, NY —  On June 27, 2021, at 4:50 pm, State Police responded to Cheever Road in the town of Lyme, Jefferson County, for a UTV roll-over crash.

When Troopers arrived, they observed numerous medical personnel attending to a male patient.  The male patient, later identified as John D. Zimmer, age 53, from Chaumont, NY, was laying on his back with serious leg and facial injuries.

A female occupant, later identified as Angela M. Watrous, age 46, from Deep River, Connecticut, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Zimmer was airlifted by LifeNet to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

The preliminary investigation has revealed the Polaris UTV was traveling southeast on Cheever Road when for unknown reasons, the operator lost control and exited off the north shoulder of the roadway.  The UTV then rolled over and the operator and passenger were ejected.  Both the operator and passenger landed in close proximately to each other on the north side of the roadway.

The crash is still under investigation.
