WATERTOWN, NY — The Figure Skating Club of Watertown is hosting a special guest coach March 29 – 1992 Olympic Silver Medalist Paul Wylie.
“We’re very excited and extremely honored that he’s coming to work with our skaters,” said FSC of Watertown Head Coach Sherry Robbins. “It’s an invaluable opportunity to learn directly from an athlete who has skated at the Olympic level.”
Wylie will coach skaters both on and off the ice at the sold-out training event between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, March 29 at the Watertown Municipal Arena. From instructing club skaters on the importance of off-ice conditioning, to coaching skaters one-on-one during on-ice lessons, Wylie brings a wealth of expertise and skating experience to share with Club athletes.
Wylie won the U.S. and Junior World Championships in 1981. He then went on to place second at the U.S. Championships in 1988, 1990, and 1992. Wylie competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France where he captured the silver medal. In his professional career, he won the 1992 U.S. Open Professional Championships and the 1993 World Professional Figure Skating Championships. He traveled the country from 1992-1998 touring with Stars on Ice. In 2008 he was inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
This has been a very successful year for the Club’s skaters with many medaling in the New York State Empire State Winter Games in Lake Placid this past February, which qualified them to compete in the State Games of America, held in San Diego, CA this July. Several Club skaters are also traveling to Massachusetts this summer to compete in the U.S. Figure Skating Excel National Festival.
