Funding Moves Carthage Area Hospital and Claxton-Hepburn from Crisis to Stabilization
news release
WATERTOWN, NY — Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) welcomes the approval of up to a $60 million loan from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and the Department of Health to support North Star Health Alliance, the parent of Carthage Area Hospital and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, as it restructures and emerges from bankruptcy.
“This is a good day for the North Country,” Gray said. “It has been a long road, and today, this facility moves from crisis to stabilization.”
“Governor Hochul and my colleague on the other side of the aisle, Chairwoman Amy Paulin, have been great partners in dealing with this issue. When rural hospitals are at risk, there is no room for politics. There is only work. That is the way the government should work.”
Carthage Area Hospital and Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center are critical lifelines across Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties, including for the families of Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division. For tens of thousands of North Country residents, these are the hospitals where their children are born, where their families are treated and where they turn in an emergency. Today’s announcement ensures the people who depend on these services the most can still access them when they need them the most.
