Hazel B. Reed, 92, Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — Hazel B. Reed, 92, Watertown passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Samaritan Keep Home where she had been a resident for several years.

She was born Aug. 20, 1926, in Lorraine, a daughter to Carl and Anna Williams Reed.

Hazel graduated from Belleville Union Academy in 1945 and later graduated from Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute. Soon after graduation she moved to Sand Point, Alaska where she was employed as a radio operator and bookkeeper for Aleutian Cold Storage (later became Wakefield Seafood’s) and remained there until her retirement in 1988. At that time she returned to New York to care for her sister.

Called “The Voice of Sand Point” Hazel was commended by the United States Coast Guard in 1973 for her “excellence and continued cooperation” during various disasters at sea.

Hazel enjoyed nature, traveling, dancing, needlepoint, quilting and was an outstanding cook who loved nothing more than to entertain her friends and family.

She is survived by a nephew, Gerald (Loretta) Reed and a niece, Charlotte (Joseph) Briant, great nieces and a great nephew.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Olive Reed, a brother, Frederick V. Reed, and a nephew, John S. Reed.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of her family.
