Indian River High School announces Class of 2022 academic leaders

PHILADELPHIA, NY —  Indian River High School is proud to announce the academic leaders of the Class of 2022.

They are: Valedictorian, Madison McCranie, daughter of Todd and Rebecca McCranie, from Fort Drum, New York; Salutatorian, Evan Young, son of Carlton and Doreen Young, from Brownville, New York; and Vocational Leader, Jake Whitmore, son of Lucas and Miranda Whitmore, from Antwerp, New York.

Madison McCranie has been named the 2022 Valedictorian with a cumulative grade point average of 99.00. Madison has taken advanced classes throughout her high school career and will graduate with 27 college credits through Syracuse University and Jefferson Community College with the potential to earn more through the CLEP exams as well as with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science. Honors received include the DAR Good Citizen Award, Academic All-Star, Scholar-Athlete, and Heart of a Champion.

Madison is an active member in our school community. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Madison is active in SADD, where she has held the treasurer position for the past year. During her senior year, Madison has been active in Whiz Quiz, German Club, and Amnesty International. Madison participated in our Varsity Swim Team throughout high school. She has been extremely involved with our music department. Madison was the TriM treasurer in 9th grade, and has been active in band, chorus, Stage Crew, and is a member of the Thespian Honor Society.

Madison is also an active member in her community. She participated in the Horizons Program and the Women in STEM breakfast through Clarkson University. She has been involved in lifeguarding and has generously donated her time passing out summer meals for CAPC and participating in the Teen Volunteer Council at Flower Memorial Library. Madison has also been a member of the YMCA Blue Sharks since 8th grade.

Madison will be attending Barnard College in the fall.

Evan Young has been named the 2022 Salutatorian with a cumulative grade point average of 98.03. Evan has taken advanced classes throughout his high school career and will graduate with 23 college credits through Syracuse University and Jefferson Community College as well as with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science. Evan has been on the Honor Roll throughout his high school career.

Evan is active in our school community. Evan has been an active member of Stage Band throughout high school and has also participated in NYSSMA, BiCounty, and Area All-State. Evan was involved in TriM in ninth grade and has been an active member of the Junior Classical League and Robotics Club throughout grades nine through twelve. Evan has also been a member of our local 4-H.

Evan has been accepted into the Honors Program at Rochester Institute of Technology with the RIT Presidential Scholarship.

Jake Whitmore has been named the Vocational Leader with a cumulative grade point average of 95.55. Jake has taken advanced English classes throughout his high school career and will graduate with 6 college credits through Jefferson Community College as well as with a Regents Diploma with Honors. Jake has been on the Honor Roll throughout his high school career as well as a member of the National Honor Society. He was Student of the Month during his freshman year.

Jake has been active in sports throughout his high school career. He participated in Trap Shooting for the past two years. Jake played an integral role in Varsity Football and Varsity Wrestling throughout high school. He has received numerous awards, including All-State recognition, and various accolades for both sports over the years and receives high praise from his coaches and opponents.

Jake is not only active in school but in his community as well. He participated in the Indian River Ambulance Ugly Sweater Run for two years. He has donated numerous hours volunteering at the Indian River Baptist Church and the Indian River Pee Wee and Modified Wrestling Programs as well as other local youth tournaments. Jake plays an active role in his father’s business, Whitmore Mowing & More. He has worked hard over the years with general contractors and local farms.

Jake has applied to and been accepted at North American Lineman Training Center in Tennessee. It is clear that Jake is a hard-working, driven young man.
