CORTLAND, NY — James William MacGregor, 71, of East River Rd., Cortland, passed away from complications of COVID-19 on Dec. 24, 2021.
He was born March 20, 1950, in Watertown, NY, the son of the late James “Scotty” MacGregor and Agnes Castagnier.
In 1968 Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps proudly serving during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1978 with the rank of staff sergeant. He received numerous awards and citations during his service including the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was employed for 25 years as a corrections officer with the New York State Department of Corrections retiring in 2005. Following his retirement, he worked as a corrections officer at the Cortland County Department of Corrections for three years.
He is survived by two daughters from his first marriage to Carol Desormeau MacGregor, Sherry and Eugene Bougouma of Fayetville, North Carolina, Christine and Wesley Hunt of Watertown. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brittany Hunt, Justine Hunt, Douglas Hunt, all of Watertown; his great-grandchildren, Chaynce, Emery, Alayah; and his siblings, John MacGregor, Donald Jones, Brenda Farmer, Karolyn Nowlan, Susan White, and Lorraine Petrie.
Besides his parents, James was predeceased by four siblings, James F. MacGregor, Etta Lattin, Steven Jones and Timothy Jones.
His family will hold a private memorial to honor him at a later date.
