Jefferson County to participate in statewide STOP-DWI Thanksgiving crackdown enforcement effort

WATERTOWN, NY —  Jefferson County STOP-DWI announced today that Jefferson County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving.

This Thanksgiving weekend, millions will hit the roads eager to spend time with family and friends. It’s one of the busiest travel times of the year, and unfortunately more people on the roadways means the potential for more vehicle crashes. In a combined effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives law enforcement officers across New York State will take to the roads. The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will end on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019.

As part of the New York State STOP-DWI Enforcement Crackdowns, Jefferson County STOP-DWI will be working with, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Watertown City Police Department in their efforts to protect everyone from impaired drivers either by alcohol and/or drugs during this busy time of year.

The funding for this crackdown was provided by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation through a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.  During this time period, law enforcement will vigorously enforce laws related to driving while impaired with special emphasis on impaired driving either by alcohol or drugs.

The STOP-DWI Thanksgiving Weekend Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Throughout the remainder of the year the Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign will also target the national Holiday Season in December.

“Each Thanksgiving, we begin another holiday season while remembering all we are grateful for.” said Jason L. Widrick, Jefferson County STOP-DWI Coordinator.  “Law enforcement officers throughout New York State will take to the roads in an effort to stop impaired drivers, prevent injuries, and save lives. Our message is simple – Don’t drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs”.

While STOP-DWI efforts across New York have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol and drug related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving.
