Kathleen Z. Stockwell, 95, Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN, NY – Kathleen Z. Stockwell, 95, Copenhagen, passed away on Saturday night, Jan. 5, 2019, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Kathleen was born on May 17, 1923, in Watertown, New York, a daughter of the late Clarence and Reba (Smith) Zimmer.  In 1940, she graduated from Brownville Glen Park High School.  She went on to attend Newcomb Beauty Academy.

On Aug. 17, 1943, Kathleen married Neil W. Stockwell at the Zimmer family home in Watertown. Mr. Stockwell was the Secretary and Treasurer of Copenhagen Central School. He passed away on July 31, 1981.

Kathleen was employed as a Telephone Operator for NY Telephone Company, and worked in the cafeteria at Copenhagen Central School for a time.  Lastly, she was employed as the Town Clerk of Denmark, retiring after 31 years of service.

Mrs. Stockwell was a member of the United Church of Copenhagen, serving as the Sunday School Superintendent. She also volunteered for the Copenhagen Nutrition Program. She was a former member of the Pamelia Grange and the  Asbury Methodist Church as well as the Copenhagen Easter Star.

She lived in Copenhagen from 1948 until November of 2016, when she moved in with her daughter Karla and son-in-law Paul Spedding. She resided there until February of 2018, when she moved to an assisted living facility, Samaritan Summit Village in Watertown, New York.

Kathleen is survived by one daughter, Karla J. (Paul R.) Spedding of Fulton, NY; a daughter-in-law, Laurinda Dixon Stockwell of Norwood, NY; a son-in-law, Clarence R. Clemons of Watertown, NY; four grandchildren, Scott and Cory (Nicole) Clemons; Iphagainia (Chris) Tanguay; and Jedidiah (Lisa) Gramlin; five great-grandchildren, Allie, Leah and Neil Clemons; Mia and Sebastian Tanguay; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Rev. Kevin F. Stockwell who died in 2011 as well as a daughter, Karen M. Clemons who died in 2003. Also predeceasing her are two brothers, Carleton and John Zimmer.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, at the United Church of Copenhagen. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at the church, with Pastor Larry Duthie officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in North Watertown Cemetery.
