Leland L. “Zeke” Weaver, 84, Deferiet

DEFERIET, NY — Leland L. “Zeke” Weaver, 84, of 51 Anderson Ave., Deferiet, died Thursday, July 12, 2018, at his home where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born Feb. 7, 1934, in Lewisburg, the son of the late John and Fannie (Reynolds) Weaver, he was a 1951 graduate of Augustinian Academy in Carthage.

He married the former Joan M. Higgins on December 7, 1954 at St. James Church in Carthage. Zeke served with the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956.

He was a papermaker, employed by the St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet for 39 years, retiring from Champion International in 1996.

Zeke was a member of St. Rita’s Church in Deferiet, the Deferiet Vol. Fire Department, Carlowden Country Club, BPOE Elks Lodge # 1762 and the American Legion Post # 789, all of Carthage.

He was an avid golfer, bowler and sports enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Weaver of Deferiet; three daughters and their husbands, Betsy and Gary Parobeck of Carthage, Mary Kjersem of Watertown and Laura and Justin Wormwood of Carthage; two sons and their wives, Dale and Karen Weaver of Carthage and Coco and Dawn Weaver of Champion; a son-in-law, Daniel Covey of Carthage; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Highers of Carthage and Alice Rivers of Canandaigua; a brother, Edwin Weaver of Fort Wayne, IN; and nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by a daughter, JoAnn Covey and a granddaughter, AmyJo Covey.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage, with Deacon Richard Staab officiating. Calling hours will precede the services from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
