LOWVILLE, NY — On May 15th, 2026, the Lewis County Sheriffs Office arrested Daniel T. Chaires, 49, of Lowville, New York, following an investigation into the sale of a firearm.
On May 11, 2026, it was alleged that Chaires had contacted an individual, regarding selling an Assault Weapon. Upon further investigation, Chaires was located in the Village of Lowville, and found to be possession of a non-compliant Assault Weapon, which was seized at that time. It was also discovered that Chaires was not in compliance possessing a firearm, as he had a previous felony conviction.
Chaires was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd, Assault Rifle, a class “D” felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd, Ammo Clip, a class “D” felony, and Attempted Criminal Sale of a Firearm, intent to sell, a class “E” felony. The assault weapon was also found to be a “ghost gun,” due to having no identification.
Chaires was processed and arraigned in Lewis County CAP court, where he was released on his own recognizance.
The investigation is still ongoing.
