Margaret Countryman, 89, formerly of Carthage

CARTHAGE, NY — Margaret Countryman, 89, formerly of Carthage, died Thursday evening, April 25, 2019, at her home in the town of Pitcairn.

Born June 21, 1929, in Carthage, the daughter of the late Theodore and Elizabeth (LaLone) Abrams, she was a 1948 graduate of Augustinian Academy.

She married Edgar F. Countryman Sr. on Aug. 7, 1948, at St. James Church in Carthage. Edgar, a heavy equipment operator and pilot, died Feb. 5, 2005. Margaret worked as a domestic for several families in Carthage for many years. Together with her family, they operated a small airport at their home on Alexandria St. Road before moving to Pitcairn.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, lifetime member of the Black River Fiddlers Association and was a Major in the Civil Air Patrol.

She is survived by four daughters, Theresa Rocker and Shirley Broyles, both of Carthage, Rose Countryman of Palm Coast, FL, and Elly Countryman of Pitcairn; two sons, Edgar F. Countryman Jr. of Carthage and William J. Countryman of West Carthage; 17 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, John, twin daughters, Gloria and Joanne Countryman; a sister, Theodosia Abrams; and two brothers, Gerald and Theodore Abrams.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, in St. James Cemetery with Rev. Donald A. Robinson officiating. There will be no calling hours.
