LORRAINE, NY — Margaret Shelmidine Curtiss, 91, Lorraine, widow of George Shelmidine and Thomas Curtiss, passed away Friday, March 29, 2019, at the Central Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Syracuse, where she had been a patient since March 11.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, at the Lorraine United Methodist Church with Pastor Nancy Russell officiating. Burial will be later in the spring in Fairview Cemetery, Rodman. Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville.
Margaret was born April 7, 1927, in Lorraine, a daughter to Raymond A. and Kate H. Macklen Wise. She graduated from Adams High School in 1944 and attended the Oswego Normal College for two years.
She married George Shelmidine on May 18, 1947, at the Lorraine Methodist Church. Mr. Shelmidine, a retired dairy farmer in Lorraine, passed away February 14, 1985.
Margaret married Thomas O. Curtiss of Belleville on April 27, 1991. Mr. Curtiss passed on May 5, 2011.
Margaret worked at Moore’s Store in Lorraine in her early years. She was a substitute rural letter carrier out of the Lorraine post office before becoming a full time carrier out of the Adams post office, retiring on September 1, 1990, after 33 years of service.
Margaret was a member of the Lorraine United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Women’s Wednesday Club. She was a former member of the Lorraine Grange.
She enjoyed traveling and going to auctions. She loved to play the piano and organ, collecting ceramics, post cards and porcelain dolls and figurines.
Margaret is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marcia (Shelmidine) and Tim Dennis, Albany; two sons and their wives Raymond and Constance Shelmidine, Dexter, Warren and Brenda Shelmidine, Lorraine; grandchildren, Kimberly, Kelly, Chad, Melissa, Sarah and Marcus; five great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Caden, Cason, Adelyne and Harrison; her brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Shirley Wise, Dannsville, NY; nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by a sister, Nellie Wise.
Margaret’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Nancy Bice, Martha Misczuk and Laurie Longmore and the staff at Central Park Nursing Center for the exceptional care and comfort given to Margaret and her family.
