Martha W. Pott, 97, Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — Martha W. Pott, 97, Watertown and formerly of Clayton, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at Ives Hill Retirement Community where she was under the care of her family, caregivers and Hospice.

The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown, with Rev. Leonard Sponaugle, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, presiding. Burial in Clayton Cemetery will be at the family’s convenience.

Born June 11, 1922, in Bucyrus, OH, the daughter of John P. and Hazel Valentine Wyer, she was a 1940 graduate of Bucyrus High School and received her a bachelor’s of science degree in 1943 from Miami University, Oxford, OH.

On Aug. 18, 1944, she married Frederick C. “Fritz” Pott at First Presbyterian Church, Bucyrus with Rev. Clement Loehr officiating. Mr. Pott died Feb. 10, 2009.

She taught elementary school for two years and then was a devoted wife and community volunteer. The couple’s 64 years of married life were spent in Cincinnati, OH, Valleyfield, Quebec, Detroit, MI, and Downey, CA.

After her husband’s retirement they moved to Clayton in 1989, living there for 17 years. The couple moved to Ives Hill in 2006.

Her favorites for volunteering included Canadian Girl Guides, Meals on Wheels, food pantries, Friends of the Library, and various Sunday school and church groups. At Ives Hill she will be remembered for watering the plants and organizing the History in the Parlor classes.

Martha attended First Presbyterian Church, Watertown and formerly attended Clayton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, David F. and wife Sylvia D, Fairbanks, AK; a daughter, Christine P. Mercer and husband James H., Plessis; three grandson, Aaron, Brett and Shane Mercer; two great grandsons, Roren and Dylan; a brother, Rev. George W. Wyer and wife Nancy, Greenville, SC; and several nieces, a nephew, and cousins.
