Mary M. Sweeney, 75, Castorland

CASTORLAND, NY –  Mary Marjorie Sweeney, 75, of Second Road, Castorland, passed away on Sunday evening, Dec. 1, 2019, at her home, under the loving care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2019, at First Baptist Church, Carthage with Pastor Eric Svereika officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be held privately by the family. Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.

Born Sept. 1, 1944, in Carthage, NY, a daughter of the late Henry and Anna M Dealing Harper, she attended country school in the Town of Croghan and graduated from Carthage Central School. After high school she worked as a secretary and later attended Potsdam College for teaching.  Before her marriage, she worked at Ft. Drum.

She married Jack E. Sweeney on July 2, 1976, at First Baptist church, Carthage.  The couple made their home on the Second Road in Castorland.

Mary was an active member of First Baptist Church of Carthage.

Mary had a lifelong love of history, community service and a love of learning.  Mary was Town of Croghan Historian alongside her husband Jack until his passing.  Mary continued serving as Town of Croghan Historian until recently. Mary served on the Board of Directors for the Beaver Falls Library and Lewis County Historical Society.

Surviving are her son and his companion, Jeremiah Sweeney and Roxanne Yousey of Castorland; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Judy Harper of Carthage; a brother-in-law, John Lackey of Carthage; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Jack Sweeney; two brothers, Richard Harper and Henry Harper Jr.; and a sister, Joyce Lackey.
