WATERTOWN, NY — Richard L. Tibbles, 77, Watertown, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, at Samaritan Medical Center where he had been a patient since June 19, 2022.
Calling hours are noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with a memorial service to begin at 2 p.m. Burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post 61, Sterling Street, after the burial.
Richard was born March 1, 1945, in Watertown a son to Byron and Gladys Martain Tibbles. He attended Watertown Schools.
He married Sonja Carlson on July 2, 1966 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church. They resided in Watertown.
Richard was a self employed contractor most of his life. He also worked at the New York Air Brake for several years. He ran a concession stand at the fairs for many years with his children. He loved to collect metal and scrapping.
Most of all he loved being a grandpa of the one and only granddaughter Haley, the apple of his eye, and a father to his three children and his dogs Brit Brit and Scrappy.
Richard was a smart and witty full of life man with a sense of humor. We all loved that about him. He had a heart of gold and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. Richard loved to go to Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club with his granddaughter and chat with friends who he ran in to. You would always see him on his scooter. He enjoyed attending the fairs with his family.
He was an avid coffee drinker at McDonalds. Richard was well know for his many abilities which included holiday and Christmas decorations at his house on Emerson Street for which he received notoriety in the local media for his light display for which he was rewarded for with smiles.
Richard was a great father and grandpa to his children and many more who looked to him as a Dad.
He is survived by his sons Richard A. And Danny Tibbles, a daughter Sonja L. Tibbles, a granddaughter Haley Carrier; a brother Robert J. Tibbles; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Sonja Carlson Tibbles in 1995; his father Byron in 1980, his mother Gladys Martain Tibbles in 1995; his siblings Patricia Zaveri Tibbles in 2015, Kenneth Tibbles in 2003 and Byron Tibbles, Jr., in 2012.
